Using SOLIDWORKS PDM Standard Training Course Overview

The focus of the Using SOLIDWORKS PDM Standard training course is on the fundamental skills and concepts central to the successful use of SOLIDWORKS PDM including storing documents, revision control, and working within SOLIDWORKS.

This course is designed around a process or task-based approach to training. Rather than focus on individual features and functions, a process-based training course emphasizes the process and procedures you follow to complete a particular task.

By utilizing case studies to illustrate these processes, you will learn the necessary commands, options and menus in the context of completing a task.

Using SOLIDWORKS PDM Standard Lessons

The following lessons are included in the course

Lesson 1: Installation Planning

Gather the required information needed to plan a SOLIDWORKS PDM Standard installation and understand the scenario used for this course.

Lesson 2: The Administration Tool

Start the SOLIDWORKS PDM Standard Administration tool. During lesson 2, we will identify the major sections of the Administration tool, create a new SOLIDWORKS PDM Standard vault and create a local view of a SOLIDWORKS PDM Standard vault.

Lesson 3: Users and Groups

Add new users and groups to the vault. Lesson 3 will explain how to create and apply permissions to users and how to assign Group level permissions.

Lesson 4: Folder Card Creation

Understand how cards work within PDM. Attendees will create a Folder Card from scratch and assign variables to the card.

Lesson 5: File and Search Cards

Lesson 5 looks at importing cards into the PDM Vault & making changes. Control Logic will be added to cards to limit visibility dependant on options selected. Also time will be spent looking at the Quick Search functionality.

Lesson 6: Column and Bill of Materials (BOM) Views

Creation of a File List Column set to dictate the way PDM Columns will show within Windows Explorer for users. Course attendees will also create a BOM Column set to be used within the Windows Explorer view of PDM.

Lesson 7: Workflow

Create a Workflow to represent the entire internal workflow structure of files practised in the training scenario. Learn how to add States and Transitions to allow the movement of files through the Workflow. Permissions will be added to the previously created States and Transitions to restrict Users and Groups access to each stage of the Workflow. Create and apply a Revision Scheme to the Workflow.

Lesson 8: Notifications and Tasks

Learn to configure automatic notifications to be sent during file life cycles (attached to workflow). Set up Tasks in the Vault and attach them to Workflow Transitions. Configure Machines to be used to run tasks.

Lesson 9: Data Migration

Lesson 9 will look at the best workflow to bring in legacy data into the Vault on a case by case basis and setting Metadata to correct values.

Lesson 10: Vault Backup

Understanding the process to backup both the Archive Server and the Database for the PDM Vault.

What makes a good SOLIDWORKS PDM Administrator?

The successful implementation, use and growth of SOLIDWORKS PDM, is largely dependent on the skill of the administrator. Below are some characteristics that make for a good SOLIDWORKS PDM Administrator:

  • Ability to form concession:
    • Individuals and groups can have differing goals and priorities. A good PDM Admin should be able to form a solution, that the majority can agree on.
  • Ability to make decisions:
    • At times concession is not practical or possible. A good PDM admin should be able to make decisions that benefit the company as a whole.
  • A solid understanding of the company's policies and processes:
    • In order to ensure that PDM reflects important company policies and processes, a good PDM Admin should have a good understanding of these policies and processes and/or be able to easily access information on these policies and processes.
  • General computer skills:
    • A comfortable working understanding of computers and a general understanding of networks.
    • The admin should also have access to technical resources such as IT/IS.
  • Time to maintain and administer PDM:
    • The PDM Admin should be able to schedule time for maintaining PDM (updates).
    • General troubleshooting.
    • Developing and growing the use of PDM in order to take full advantage of the automation and time savings offered by SOLIDWORKS PDM.
